Careum Verlag – Chloé, the AI Learning Coach as a Digital Learning Revolution
Careum Verlag – a leading provider of educational media in the Swiss healthcare and social sectors – is expanding its didactic offering with Chloé, an AI-powered learning coach. In close collaboration with isolutions, a digital solution was created that paves the way for personalized, inclusive, and engaging learning experiences. In just six months, a scalable web product evolved from a proof-of-concept, fundamentally transforming the way learning is delivered.
Initial Situation
As a specialized publisher, Careum develops modern, practice-oriented educational media for vocational and continuing education in the healthcare sector. With Chloé, Careum aimed to break new ground by creating a digital solution that adapts to the individual learning needs of students. At the heart of the project was the vision of a virtual coach that not only conveys learning content but tailors it to the learner’s language level, cognitive abilities, and personal preferences.
In addition to the challenge of presenting complex content in a clear, interactive, and visually appealing way, the goal was to support neurodiverse learners effectively. Chloé was designed to explain technical terms, translate content into plain or native languages, and visualize information using tools like mind maps. She also assists learners in preparing for qualification procedures (QV) with interactive exercises and adaptive practice tests.
Careum sought an implementation partner who not only offered technical excellence but also understood the pedagogical context – and who could realize a high-innovation project with agility, efficiency, and user focus. isolutions was selected to co-develop this vision from the ground up.
Solution
From Prototype to Award-Winning Learning Platform
The collaboration began with a proof-of-concept (PoC) to validate key hypotheses: Can an AI-based coach meaningfully fulfill the intended functions? Which AI technologies are most suitable? How would learners and teachers respond to a digital assistant in the classroom?
The PoC delivered convincing results: it received highly positive feedback from schools and was awarded first place in 2024 at the ENTERPRIZE competition held by the Swiss Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (EHB) – a major milestone and a catalyst for the project's further development.
Scalable Architecture for Personalized Learning
Building on insights gained from the PoC, a Minimal Viable Product (MVP) was developed – a fully cloud-based web app designed for rapid iteration and easy maintenance. The solution leverages the following technologies and services:
-
Azure OpenAI & Azure AI Services for natural language processing, content simplification, and translation
-
Azure Cosmos DB & App Service for data storage and web platform hosting
-
Azure DevOps for continuous integration and delivery
-
Microsoft Entra ID for secure identity management
-
React / Material UI, TypeScript, .NET Core / ASP.NET Core for a high-performance and modern frontend and backend stack
Chloé was built with a focus on full data residency in Switzerland – all data is processed and stored exclusively in Swiss-based Azure datacenters to meet the highest standards of privacy and compliance.
