Copilot Channel Agent: your AI support in the channel

M365 Copilot – Channel Agent (1)

With the new Channel Agent, starting January 2026 every Teams channel will have its own AI assistant that analyzes, summarizes, and actively supports conversations, meetings, and Planner content. The assistant carries the channel’s name, works directly inside the channel, and supports you in real time.

What and How

What can the Channel Agent do?

  • Status reports: It automatically creates loop‑based status reports by consolidating channel messages, meeting summaries, Planner boards, and announcements.
  • Task assignment: You can mention tasks directly in the channel, and the agent will turn them into Planner tasks including status tracking.
  • Context‑based answers: Ask the agent, for example, for the latest budget status — it searches channel content, Planner, and meetings, and uses web search when needed.
  • Scheduling: The agent generates meeting proposals, drafts agendas, and sends out invitations.

How does it work?

  • Automatic activation: A Channel Agent is automatically created for every new channel.
  • Easy addition: Alternatively, you can manually add the agent via “Add people, agents & bots.”
  • Permissions: Users need a Microsoft 365 Copilot license and must be members of the respective channel. Administrators can centrally manage and control the creation of agents.

Important Notes

What should you pay attention to?

  • Scope: Works only in standard channels, not in private or guest channels; access to the in‑meeting chat history is required.
  • Language support: In the preview, primarily supports English (US).
  • Compliance: Processes only content that the respective user has access to and shares only information explicitly permitted.
  • File grounding: Since November 2025, the agent can also incorporate SharePoint files within the channel to provide even more relevant answers.

Benefits

Your everyday benefits

Efficiency boost: Automatically generated reports, tasks, and meetings reduce manual steps and save time.
Team synchronization: Loop reports and Planner tasks within the same channel ensure that everyone stays aligned at all times.
Multi‑tool integration: Tasks from tools like Jira or GitHub are centrally coordinated — ideal for complex workflows.
Context knowledge: Responses and recommendations are based on the channel’s internal communication, making them personalized and relevant.

Conclusion

The Channel Agent is a smart project companion in every Teams channel. It automates reporting, task management, and meeting planning, and provides direct access to channel‑specific knowledge — intelligent and practical. Thanks to its integration with Planner, SharePoint files, and external tools, it becomes the central hub for efficient and transparent collaboration.
